Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Tanglewood Nature Center is a 140-acre nature preserve and environmental education center located in Elmira, Chemung County, New York. It features a range of habitats including woodlands, meadows, wetlands, and ponds, which support diverse plant species and wildlife such as birds, amphibians, and small mammals. The center was established in 1967 with the mission of promoting environmental education and conservation awareness. Its facilities include an interpretive center with live animal exhibits, educational displays, and a full-time staff of naturalists who conduct programs for schools and the general public. Visitors can explore more than three miles of well-maintained trails that wind through forests and alongside the ponds, offering ample opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and nature study. Noteworthy landmarks include the Hawk Watch Platform, which provides elevated views for spotting migrating raptors in the fall, and the Butterfly Garden, designed to attract pollinators. The center hosts seasonal events such as summer nature camps, guided hikes, and workshops focused on local habitats and species. Tanglewood’s combination of accessible trails, educational programs, and diverse ecosystems makes it a popular destination for families, school groups, and outdoor enthusiasts in the Southern Tier region. The center also serves as an important community resource for environmental stewardship and outdoor recreation within an urban setting.
