Bandi Schaum Nature Preserve

Bandi Schaum Nature Preserve occupies approximately 79 acres in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, providing visitors with a peaceful natural setting amid suburban surroundings. The preserve features an interconnected network of moderate trails that wind through deciduous forests, wetland areas, and small streams. The terrain is gently rolling, making it accessible for hikers of most skill levels. Ecologically, the preserve supports typical northeastern hardwood forests, offering habitat to various birds, amphibians, small mammals, butterflies, and native plants, some of which are uncommon in the region's increasingly developed landscape. Originally preserved through local conservation efforts, Bandi Schaum serves as a community green space where residents and visitors can enjoy quiet walks, nature observation, and occasional educational programs. Key recreational opportunities include hiking, birdwatching, and photography. Notable landmarks within the preserve are small forested summits with views of surrounding suburban areas and wetlands fostering amphibian breeding during spring. The preserve is well-regarded for its peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity it provides for local residents to connect with nature without traveling far. Its proximity to parking areas and paved streets make it an accessible destination for families, casual hikers, and nature lovers. Management focuses on habitat preservation, controlling invasive species, and maintaining trail conditions to ensure both ecological health and visitor enjoyment.
