Columbia Canal Nature Preserve is a 356-acre protected area located along the historic Columbia Canal, just northeast of downtown Columbia, South Carolina. The preserve is situated along a stretch of the 12-mile canal built in the early 19th century, originally constructed to provide water power and hydroelectric energy for the city. The canal and preserve run parallel to the Congaree River, creating a unique riparian environment composed of bottomland hardwood forests and wetlands. This area provides habitat to a variety of wildlife including songbirds, turtles, fish, and amphibians, fostering rich biodiversity in an urban setting. Visitors can enjoy nearly 6 miles of multi-use trails that wind through forests and along the water’s edge, making the preserve a favorite spot for local hikers, joggers, cyclists, and anglers. The nature preserve showcases a blend of history and ecology, featuring historic remnants of the original canal infrastructure and scenic overlooks of the waterway.
