The White Mountains, or Lefka Ori, are a prominent mountain range located in western Crete. Characterized by their pale limestone peaks often capped with snow in winter, the range reaches its highest point at Mount Pachnes, rising to 2,453 meters (8,048 feet). The White Mountains cover an extensive area with deep gorges, alpine plateaus, and karstic formations, making it one of the most ecologically significant areas in Crete. The nature reserve protects a variety of habitats that support endemic plant species such as the Cretan tulip and rare fauna including the kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat.
