Located in Gilbert, Arizona, the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch spans approximately 110 acres and was created as part of a wastewater treatment project that incorporated wetlands restoration. This preserve provides a critical habitat for migratory birds, native fish, and other wildlife through its system of nine constructed ponds and several miles of walking trails winding through wetlands, upland areas, and riparian vegetation zones. The preserve’s geography is characterized by flat terrain with a combination of aquatic and semi-arid uplands, providing a unique ecological mix within the Sonoran Desert environment. Since its establishment in 1999, the Preserve has become an important stopover site for hundreds of bird species, attracting birdwatchers, photographers, and researchers. The Preserve is equipped with shaded ramadas, picnic areas, and an on-site nature center that offers interpretive exhibits about local ecology and water conservation.
