Durankulak Lake is a shallow coastal lagoon located near the Black Sea in northeastern Bulgaria, close to the border with Romania. The lake and its surrounding protected area cover approximately 14,000 hectares and consist of freshwater and brackish water ecosystems, reed beds, marshes, and sand dunes. It is part of a complex of coastal lagoons that play a crucial role in migratory bird routes across Europe. The lake is especially noted for its large populations of waterfowl, including rare and endangered species such as the Dalmatian pelican and red-breasted goose. The Durankulak Protected Area also includes remnants of ancient human settlements dating back to the Neolithic period, with significant archaeological sites near the lake, including the famed Durankulak Necropolis. Ecologically, the area supports numerous species of fish, amphibians, and plants adapted to wetland habitats. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy birdwatching, fishing, and kayaking within the lake's calm waters, as well as hiking in the surrounding areas. The protected zone is managed under strict conservation regulations due to its designation as a Ramsar wetland of international importance and inclusion within the UNESCO-supported Man and the Biosphere Programme. The region’s sandy beaches and dunes also draw visitors interested in nature photography and quiet coastal experiences. Visitors are encouraged to respect sensitive wildlife zones and seasonal restrictions designed to protect breeding birds.
