Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Garashsyzlyk Sanctuary is a prominent wildlife protection area located in the Lebap Province of eastern Turkmenistan. Established to conserve the fragile steppe environment and a variety of rare and endemic species, the sanctuary covers a vast territory characterized by semi-arid landscapes, rolling plains, and patches of desert. It serves as an important habitat for several endangered mammals such as the goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) and the Turkmenian kulan (Equus hemionus kulan), as well as for numerous bird species including rare raptors and migratory waterfowl. The sanctuary plays a critical role in regional biodiversity conservation, acting as a refuge for plants and animals adapted to harsh climatic conditions with hot summers and cold winters. Human access and recreational activities are limited to minimize disturbance, but the area is frequented by researchers and conservationists focused on steppe and desert ecology. Visitors interested in wildlife observation, photography, and experiencing vast untouched natural landscapes may find the sanctuary compelling, although amenities and developed trails are minimal. The reserve's remoteness and strict protection status underscore its importance in protecting Turkmenistan’s ecological heritage and supporting ongoing scientific research on species conservation and ecosystem management.
