The Valley of Fires Recreation Area is centered around the Malpais Lava Flow, one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States, created approximately 5,000 years ago. The site covers about 125 square miles of relatively young volcanic rock with areas of sharp formations and rugged terrain. The contrast between the black basalt and the surrounding desert life creates a rich visual tapestry that is highly appealing to visitors. The ecological diversity here includes a variety of plant and animal species, with a mixture of cacti, yucca, and small game among the lava outcrops. It provides a great opportunity for photography, particularly at sunrise or sunset when the colors come alive.
