About Cheniere Lake Recreation Area

Cheniere Lake Recreation Area offers a waterfront setting for fishing, camping, birdwatching, and boating along the scenic shorelines of Calcasieu Lake in southwestern Louisiana.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Cheniere Lake Recreation Area is located on the north shore of Calcasieu Lake in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. It serves as a gateway to some of the Gulf Coast's rich coastal marshlands and brackish water ecosystems. The area features a large estuarine lake that supports a variety of fish species and migratory bird populations. The landscape includes coastal prairies, flooded wetlands, and marshes that provide habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, and numerous aquatic species. Established as part of the West Calcasieu Cameron Parish Wildlife Management Area, the site is popular with anglers targeting species such as redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. Visitors can enjoy the picnic areas, boat launches, and developed campgrounds that allow easy access to both freshwater and saltwater environments. The site’s location near the Gulf of Mexico offers opportunities for boating, kayaking, and birding, especially during migration seasons. Additionally, the region’s seafood heritage and natural environment attract visitors interested in outdoor photography and wildlife watching. Cheniere Lake Recreation Area supports outdoor enthusiasts with amenities like restrooms and fishing piers, while surrounding natural habitats provide a window into Louisiana’s coastal landscape and its ecological significance. The combination of water-based recreation and natural habitat makes it an appealing spot for families, anglers, and nature observers alike.
