About Clear Creek Management Area

Clear Creek Management Area is a unique conservation and recreation area in California known for its remarkable serpentine geology and rich biodiversity, offering opportunities for hiking, climbing, and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Clear Creek Management Area spans approximately 34,000 acres in San Benito County, California, and is managed primarily by the Bureau of Land Management. The area is internationally recognized for its rare serpentine soils, which create an unusual landscape supporting a variety of endemic and rare plant species, some of which are federally listed as threatened or endangered. The rugged terrain features steep canyons, rocky outcrops, and mineral-rich formations, shaped by the region's complex geological history. Clear Creek is also notable for the presence of chrysotile asbestos veins naturally embedded in the rock, requiring visitors to follow strict safety guidelines. Established to protect its fragile ecological systems, the area offers visitors diverse recreational opportunities such as hiking, rock climbing on serpentine and limestone formations, photography, and wildlife viewing. The area supports an impressive diversity of animals including the San Benito evening-primrose and the San Benito fritillary butterfly. Historically, the area was subject to mineral exploration and mining, but current management focuses on conservation and responsible recreation. Visitors are drawn to Clear Creek's distinctive landscapes and biological richness, making it a valuable destination for naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts interested in geology and botany.
