Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is located on the sunny Kohala Coast of Hawaii's Big Island. This area is particularly famous for its half-mile stretch of pristine white sand beach, consistently ranked among the best beaches in the United States. It offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and is a haven for swimming, sunbathing, and beach activities. The beach is relatively flat and wide, providing ample space for visitors to enjoy their day. Beyond the beach, the area is characterized by natural volcanic landscapes and native Hawaiian flora. Historically, the region was used by native Hawaiians for fishing and gathering. Today, it remains a vital part of the local culture and economy, attracting thousands of visitors each year. In addition to the beach, the area features picnic pavilions, showers, restrooms, and a visitor center. The clear waters are ideal for snorkeling, revealing a rich underwater ecosystem of coral and tropical fish just off the shore. Notably, the recreation area is an excellent vantage point for whale watching during the winter months when humpback whales migrate through the area.
