Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Jahorina Nature Park is located on the Jahorina mountain, one of the highest and most popular mountains in the Dinaric Alps, situated southeast of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Rising to an elevation of 1,916 meters at its highest peak, this area features rugged alpine terrain, dense mixed forests dominated by beech, spruce, and fir, and rich biodiversity including several endemic and protected species. Historically, Jahorina gained global visibility as a venue for the 1984 Winter Olympics, hosting alpine skiing events, which played a part in its development into a major winter sports resort. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, the park offers numerous hiking and mountain biking trails during the warmer months, birdwatching, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and Bosnia’s valleys. Several natural landmarks, including the Šator summit and the picturesque valley landscapes, highlight the park’s scenic appeal. Jahorina also preserves cultural significance with local villages showcasing traditional Eastern Bosnian heritage. The park attracts nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts year-round, combining sporting facilities with opportunities to explore pristine nature. Visitors can enjoy well-maintained resorts, guided tours, and a blend of adventure and relaxation amid the mountainous wilderness.
