Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located in the Texas Panhandle near the city of Amarillo, Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is centered around Lake Meredith, a large reservoir formed by the Sanford Dam on the Canadian River. The area spans over 11,736 acres of land and water managed by the National Park Service. The landscape consists of rolling hills, sandstone cliffs, and grasslands typical of the southern High Plains, creating a unique environment for visitors. The lake provides habitat for diverse fish species such as walleye, white bass, crappie, and catfish, attracting anglers year-round. Beyond fishing, visitors can enjoy boating, water skiing, swimming, hiking, and bird watching. The recreation area includes several campgrounds and picnic sites, making it a popular destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Historically, the dam was completed in 1965 to provide water supply and flood control, with the recreation designation following to encourage public enjoyment of the lake and surrounding land. The area also supports wildlife including deer, coyotes, and a variety of songbirds and raptors. Its semi-arid climate features hot summers and mild winters, ideal for seasonal visitation. The scenic overlooks along cliffs and the quiet coves of the lake offer photographers and nature lovers abundant opportunities. Lake Meredith NRA provides a blend of water-based recreation set against the rugged Texas plains, attracting outdoor adventurers and nature seekers throughout the year.
