Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park is located on the western outskirts of Wellington, New Zealand, covering approximately 250 hectares of rugged hills and native vegetation. The park was developed through a community-led initiative starting in the late 1990s and officially opened in 2002. It has since become one of the premier mountain biking destinations in the Wellington region, offering over 40 kilometers of purpose-built singletrack trails. These trails wind through regenerating native forest dominated by manuka and kanuka, with occasional stands of mature broadleaf trees. The park’s varied terrain includes steep climbs, flowing descents, technical features, and scenic viewpoint areas with panoramic views of Wellington Harbour, Cook Strait, and the South Island in the distance on clear days. Makara Peak serves not only mountain bikers but also hikers and trail runners who appreciate the natural setting and trail quality. The park is maintained by volunteers and the Wellington Mountain Bike Club, reflecting strong community stewardship. Its history embodies grassroots conservation and outdoor recreation development. Key landmarks within the park include Lookout Rock, where cyclists pause to absorb the spectacular vistas, and the challenging "Black Snake" downhill trail, known for its technical rocky sections. The park’s appeal stems from its range of trails suitable for beginners through advanced riders, accessibility from the city, and well-managed natural environment.
