About Montour Trail

The Montour Trail is a multi-use rail trail in southwestern Pennsylvania offering scenic, flat routes through forests, farmland, and small towns, ideal for biking, hiking, and nature observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Montour Trail is a regional rail-trail system extending approximately 63 miles through Allegheny, Washington, and Westmoreland counties in Pennsylvania. Built on the former Montour Railroad corridor, the trail connects suburban and rural landscapes with industrial history. It runs from Clairton on the Monongahela River to Coraopolis near the Ohio River, passing through small towns, wooded areas, open fields, and along waterways. The terrain is relatively flat due to its railroad origins, making it accessible to hikers, cyclists, and families. The trail features several tunnels and bridges, including the Bartley Tunnel, a 1,200-foot passage through a hill that offers a unique experience for users. Ecologically, the corridor supports mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, and riparian habitats, which provide opportunities for bird watching and wildlife viewing. Historically, the Montour Railroad was integral to coal and coke transport in the region, and interpretive signs along the trail provide insights into this industrial heritage. The trail is also a part of the Great Allegheny Passage network, linking Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., via a continuous off-road trail system. Visitors enjoy activities such as walking, running, mountain biking, birding, and photography. The trail’s proximity to Pittsburgh and its suburbs makes it a popular weekday and weekend destination for recreation and nature appreciation.
