Mount Cain Recreation Area is a popular outdoor destination on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, known for its family-friendly ski hill, rugged backcountry trails, and diverse year-round recreational opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mount Cain Recreation Area is located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, approximately 40 kilometers north of Campbell River. It occupies a mountainous region marked by dense coastal temperate rainforest and alpine meadows. The area is well known for its ski hill operated by the Mount Cain Ski Club, which offers a more rustic and less commercialized alternative to larger ski resorts. It features mostly natural snow conditions and a variety of runs, including challenging terrain for advanced skiers and snowboarders. Beyond winter sports, Mount Cain attracts visitors year-round for hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing. The trails range from easy access paths to rugged backcountry routes leading through old-growth forest and open highland areas. The ecology includes abundant Douglas fir, Western red cedar, and a variety of understory species, along with wildlife such as black bears, Roosevelt elk, and numerous bird species. Established in the 1960s as a member-operated ski facility, Mount Cain emphasizes community ownership and volunteerism. The area’s remote location and natural conditions give it a quiet, authentic outdoor experience. Visitors also appreciate the spectacular views of the surrounding Vancouver Island mountains and, on clear days, views out to the Strait of Georgia. Mount Cain Recreation Area remains popular with locals and visitors who seek an alternative to commercial ski resorts and enjoy diverse outdoor activities in a relatively undisturbed setting.
