Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Raystown Lake Recreation Area centers on Raystown Lake, the largest lake entirely within Pennsylvania, formed by the Raystown Dam on the Juniata River. Covering over 8,300 acres of water and surrounded by more than 29,000 acres of forested hills, the area provides a rich natural landscape dominated by mixed hardwood forests and abundant wildlife. The lake and surrounding lands were developed primarily in the 1970s for flood control, hydroelectric power, and recreation, transforming the region into a popular outdoor destination. Visitors enjoy a wide range of activities such as boating with over 165 miles of shoreline to explore, fishing for species like bass, walleye, and trout, and over 65 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails that traverse ridges and valleys offering scenic overlooks. The area includes several developed campgrounds, picnic areas, swimming beaches, and designated hunting zones. Notable landmarks include Seven Points Recreation Area, where most lake access is concentrated, and the surrounding Rothrock State Forest, which provides additional backcountry hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities. Raystown Lake Recreation Area appeals to families, anglers, paddlers, and trail enthusiasts looking for a combination of water-based and woodland recreation in a setting known for its tranquility and regional significance.
