Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Sandy Beach Park is located on the southeastern coast of Oahu, in the Honolulu area, along Kalanianaole Highway. The park is famed for its strong waves and sand-bottom shorebreak that provide some of the best and most challenging bodysurfing and bodyboarding opportunities on the island. The beach stretches for nearly half a mile and comprises a broad shore with fine, golden sand lined by rocky outcrops at the edges. The underwater reef formations create consistently powerful, hollow waves, making it a magnet for experienced water sports enthusiasts. Though swimming is possible, rip currents and rough surf make it a dangerous spot for casual swimmers or inexperienced beachgoers. The coastal area around the park features native coastal vegetation and offers scenic views of the Koolau Mountains inland, as well as the vast Pacific Ocean horizon. Sandy Beach Park also includes amenities such as picnic tables, restrooms, and lifeguard towers during peak months. Historically, the shorebreak has been well-known among Hawaii's local surf community and has a cultural connection to traditional wave-riding practices. Visitors enjoy watching experienced riders tackle the big surf and can often see bodyboard competitions hosted here. The park serves as a dynamic outdoor space combining high-energy ocean activities, beach relaxation, and coastal scenery. Its reputation as both an exhilarating and potentially hazardous surfing spot calls for caution and respect for the ocean conditions.
