Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Spruce Run Recreation Area centers on the 1,290-acre Spruce Run Reservoir, a key feature providing water-based activities such as fishing, swimming, and paddle sports. Located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, it encompasses nearly 2,200 acres of forested land and open spaces. The reservoir and surrounding parklands sit within the Delaware River watershed and are managed by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry. The area's rolling hills and mixed hardwood forests provide habitat for typical northeastern wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various waterfowl. Visitors enjoy a network of multi-use trails for hiking and mountain biking, many of which offer views across the reservoir and adjoining woodlands. Established in the late 1960s for water supply and public recreation, Spruce Run Recreation Area has become a favorite regional getaway. The park includes facilities for camping, including tent and RV sites, picnic areas, and swimming beaches. Anglers find excellent opportunities to catch largemouth bass, trout, and panfish in the reservoir waters. Seasonal fishing tournaments and boat rentals are also popular. The area’s accessibility from major highways and proximity to nearby towns make it attractive for day visits as well as longer stays. It appeals to families, outdoor enthusiasts, and anglers seeking a balance of water and land recreation within an easily reachable natural setting.
