Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Washington County State Recreation Area covers over 5,000 acres in southern Illinois and provides visitors with a broad array of outdoor opportunities including hiking, fishing, camping, and wildlife observation. The park features Clear Lake and Mill Creek Lake, both of which support fishing for bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, mixed hardwood forests, open meadows, and wetland areas that support a variety of plant and animal species native to the region. The area was developed to offer a natural getaway close to urban centers, featuring well-maintained campgrounds, picnic spots, and more than 30 miles of multi-use trails that weave through woodlands and along lake shores. History within the area includes remnants of old farming homesteads and the natural regeneration of the landscape after agricultural use. Visitors come for seasonal bird watching, especially during spring and fall migrations, and to enjoy the quiet, family-friendly environment. The park is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and serves as a valued resource for both recreation and conservation in Washington County.
