Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area encompasses over 3,300 acres located on the western shore of Lake Shelbyville in southern Illinois. Established in 1975, this state-managed area serves as a critical hub for outdoor enthusiasts, combining lakefront activities with forested landscapes and well-maintained facilities. The park provides access to Lake Shelbyville, a large reservoir created by damming the Kaskaskia River, offering excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, and paddle sports. The terrain consists of rolling hills, hardwood forests, and open areas that support diverse wildlife populations including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various waterfowl species. Visitors enjoy camping at one of the developed campgrounds, hiking along multiple trails, and exploring the abundant natural beauty of the park year-round. The area also supports seasonal hunting and hosts nature programs that educate about local flora and fauna. Wayne Fitzgerrell’s proximity to several small towns provides convenient access for day trips or extended stays. The park’s mix of water recreation, hiking, and wildlife viewing makes it a favored destination for anglers, families, and outdoor adventurers. All facilities are designed to accommodate campers and day visitors with boat ramps, fishing piers, picnic areas, and accessible restroom facilities.
