Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lake Minnetonka Regional Park is located in Hennepin County, Minnesota, encompassing over 1,530 acres of forest, wetlands, and shoreline surrounding Lake Minnetonka, the state’s ninth-largest lake. This regional park combines scenic beauty with outdoor recreation opportunities suitable for individuals and families. The park is characterized by mature oak and maple forests, prairie restorations, and wetlands that attract a variety of bird species and other wildlife. Historically, the Lake Minnetonka area was significant for indigenous Dakota people and later became a popular resort and recreational destination after European settlement. Today, the park is managed by Three Rivers Park District, providing a natural retreat close to Minneapolis. The lake itself supports fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding amid stunning water vistas. Notable landmarks within the park include the scenic Barker’s Island overlook and historic shoreline areas accessible from the park's boat launches. The park’s varied environments support diverse plant and animal life, making it a favored spot for birdwatchers.
