Lough Mask SAC encompasses one of Ireland’s largest and clearest limestone lakes, spanning parts of County Mayo and County Galway. Covering an area of approximately 83 square kilometers, this site is designated as a Special Area of Conservation under the European Union Habitats Directive due to its important habitats and species. Geologically, the lake lies in a karstic limestone landscape formed during the last Ice Age, creating a complex underwater environment with caves and springs that contribute to its exceptionally clear waters. The SAC supports habitats such as hard oligotrophic water with benthic vegetation, alkaline fen, and limestone pavement, all rare and ecologically significant in Ireland. Biologically, the lake is a refuge for native fish species such as Arctic char and Atlantic salmon, as well as populations of brown trout, pike, and three-spined stickleback. The surrounding wetlands and woodlands provide nesting sites for various bird species, including the uncommon Greenland white-fronted goose and several overwintering wildfowl. Human history intersects with nature here, with ancient settlements and crannogs (lake dwellings) dotting the shoreline, linking cultural heritage to the landscape. Recreationally, Lough Mask is cherished for fishing—specifically trout and pike fishing—with well-established angling clubs managing sustainable use of fish stocks. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts flock annually for the chance to observe migratory and native birds. The tranquility, clear waters, and lush surroundings also attract kayakers, photographers, and hikers seeking a peaceful wilderness experience. Access points around the lake provide opportunities for day trips or extended stays in local villages, connecting visitors to genuine Irish countryside charm.
