About Goll Woods State Nature Preserve

Goll Woods State Nature Preserve offers visitors a glimpse into one of Ohio's last intact old-growth forests, featuring giant ancient trees and rich biodiversity along the Maumee River corridor.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in northwestern Ohio near the Indiana border, Goll Woods State Nature Preserve protects approximately 220 acres of old-growth forest along the Maumee River. This preserve is one of Ohio’s few remaining examples of a pristine beech-maple forest ecosystem, home to towering American beech and sugar maple trees that are several centuries old. The forest floor supports diverse wildflowers and understory plants, making the area an ecological treasure. Established in 1969, Goll Woods offers visitors peaceful, shaded trails and a chance to experience natural forest conditions largely undisturbed by modern logging. Historically, the preserve was part of a larger tract acquired by the Goll family in the 19th century, who played a key role in protecting the area's unique ecosystem. Recreational activities include hiking on well-maintained trails with interpretive signs, birdwatching where warblers and woodpeckers are common, and seasonal photography, especially during spring wildflower bloom and vibrant fall foliage. The preserve also contains historical remnants such as old homestead sites and offers educational programs through local conservation partners. Its proximity to the Maumee River adds wetland habitats and scenic riparian views. Visitors are drawn to Goll Woods for its quiet forest atmosphere and the rare chance to walk among Ohio’s ancient giants, making it ideal for naturalists, hikers, and those interested in conservation history.
