Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve is located in Jackson County, Ohio, within the Appalachian foothills known for steep ridges and deep valleys. The preserve features over 600 acres of diverse ecosystems including mixed hardwood forests, sandstone cliffs, and wetlands surrounding the natural lake after which it is named. The preserve’s geology is marked by exposed sandstone and shale formations, giving rise to scenic waterfalls and rock outcrops. Established in 1972, it protects rare plant species and serves as a habitat for diverse wildlife such as salamanders, rare orchids, and migratory birds. The preserve is renowned for its extensive trail system, composed of trails that wind through rugged terrain and lead to notable features such as Waterfall Hollow and Lawrence Ridge. Unlike large state parks, it offers a more primitive, undisturbed outdoor experience with no developed campsites or visitor centers, appealing primarily to day hikers and naturalists. The preserve’s geology offers insight into the region’s natural history, while its flora includes critically endangered plants like the eastern prairie fringed orchid. Outdoor activities focus on hiking, wildlife viewing, and photography, with challenging trails that include steep ascents and descents along narrow paths. Visitors come to experience solitude in the quiet forest and to observe nature in an environment minimally impacted by development. Its remote setting and relatively low visitation contribute to the sense of wilderness within southeastern Ohio’s landscape.
