Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Hugo Lake State Park is located near the city of Hugo in Choctaw County, southeastern Oklahoma. The park centers around Hugo Lake, a large reservoir created by the Hugo Dam on the Kiamichi River. Encompassing approximately 13,600 surface acres of water and 4,500 acres of surrounding forested parkland, the area provides a diverse outdoor recreation experience. The region features a mix of pine and hardwood trees and supports abundant wildlife, including white-tailed deer, turkey, and a variety of fish species. The lake is renowned as a premier fishing destination, stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish. Visitors can enjoy extensive boating opportunities with multiple boat ramps and marinas. The park includes several campgrounds with amenities ranging from primitive to developed campsites, hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds. The park’s history relates to the Corps of Engineers’ construction of Hugo Dam in the 1970s, which was part of regional flood control and water management efforts. With plentiful water access, forested surroundings, and well-maintained recreational facilities, Hugo Lake State Park appeals to anglers, campers, boaters, and families seeking outdoor activities in a scenic but accessible setting in southeastern Oklahoma.
