About Bastrop State Park

Bastrop State Park is a 7,386-acre park known for its rare loblolly pine forest and diverse recreational opportunities including hiking, camping, and fishing in east-central Texas.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located along the lower Colorado River in Bastrop County, Texas, Bastrop State Park protects one of the few remaining stands of loblolly pines in Central Texas. The park covers 7,386 acres characterized by rolling hills, deep river valleys, and large loblolly pines that can reach heights of over 100 feet. The ecosystem supports a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, foxes, raccoons, and over 200 species of birds. Established in 1937 with development work by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the park features historic stone pillars, bridges, and cabins built in classic CCC style. Visitors can explore about 14 miles of well-maintained multi-use trails designed for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use. The park’s Bastrop Lake offers opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Bastrop State Park’s scenic beauty, combined with its unique loblolly pine habitat, draws nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers year-round. The park also provides campgrounds with modern amenities, picnic areas, a swimming pool, and an on-site visitor center. Its proximity to the Austin metropolitan area makes it a popular weekend escape for both locals and visitors seeking a peaceful natural setting. Educational programs and guided tours highlight the park’s natural and cultural history, emphasizing conservation efforts and the recovery following the devastating 2011 wildfires that severely damaged the forest.
