About Genesee Valley Greenway

The Genesee Valley Greenway is a multi-use trail corridor in western New York that follows historic canal and railroad routes, offering scenic outdoor recreation opportunities through rural landscapes and river valleys.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Genesee Valley Greenway State Park stretches over 90 miles through the scenic Genesee Valley in western New York, running from the city of Rochester southward to the village of Cuba. This linear park was developed on the abandoned rights-of-way of the Genesee Valley Canal and later the Genesee Valley Railroad. The trail traverses a variety of landscapes including river valleys, farmland, and woodlands, closely following the Genesee River and several other tributaries. The Greenway serves as an important recreational resource for hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling during the winter months. The path connects small villages, historic canal remnants, and natural habitats, making it a popular route for both local residents and visitors who seek extended outdoor excursions. Ecologically, the area supports a variety of wildlife, including bird species and native plants common to the temperate forests of the region. The trail passes through protected wetlands and floodplains, providing opportunities for wildlife observation. The Greenway preserves key historical elements, including canal locks and railroad artifacts, offering interpretive signage along the route to document the area's industrial past. Its length and relative flatness make it accessible for users of all skill levels. Overall, the Genesee Valley Greenway offers a unique combination of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and historical context, appealing to hikers, cyclists, equestrians, and nature enthusiasts alike.
