About Harkness Memorial Park

Harkness Memorial Park in Connecticut offers visitors a scenic coastal retreat with historic gardens, shoreline views, and extensive walking paths, making it a premier destination for outdoor recreation and leisurely exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in Waterford, Connecticut, Harkness Memorial Park spans approximately 230 acres along the Long Island Sound, encompassing beautifully maintained formal gardens, rolling lawns, and natural shoreline habitats. The park was originally the estate of Edward and Mary Harkness, philanthropists who donated the property to the state in 1950. The grounds feature the historic Eolia Mansion, an elegant early 20th-century mansion overlooking the water, which adds cultural and historical depth to the outdoor experience. Visitors can explore the carefully designed Italianate gardens, complete with fountains and floral displays, as well as wooded trails that provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching and photography. The park’s coastal location makes it suitable for walking, picnicking, and seasonal events. The diverse habitats found within the park support a variety of wildlife, from shorebirds and waterfowl to small woodland creatures. Its mix of formal landscaping and natural areas appeals to both history enthusiasts and nature lovers. The park is also a popular venue for weddings and community gatherings due to its scenic views and historic structures. With ample lawn space and extensive paved and unpaved paths, Harkness Memorial Park is ideal for a day of relaxation combined with light outdoor activity.
