Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in Ogle County in northwestern Illinois, Lowden State Park spans over rugged terrain along the western edge of the state bordering the Mississippi River. The park lies near the small town of Oregon, IL, and is named after former Illinois governor Frank Lowden. It features steep sandstone bluffs rising dramatically above the river, some of which offer panoramic views of the valley and river below. The park is characterized by mixed hardwood forests, including oak, hickory, and maple, which provide habitat for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous bird species. Lowden State Park has become a favored destination for hiking, mountain biking, and fishing. Its network of trails meanders through wooded hillsides and along the bluffs, leading to overlooks such as the impressive Eagle Point Overlook. The park also contains notable landmarks including the historic Sinsinawa Mound and several large stone formations shaped by natural erosion. Visitors can enjoy camping at two developed campgrounds offering modern amenities. The park’s proximity to the Mississippi River also opens opportunities for paddling and fishing. Lowden State Park's varied topography, peaceful forests, and views of the mighty river create a rewarding outdoor experience for families, day hikers, and nature lovers seeking a blend of active recreation and scenic beauty.
