Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located in Atoka County, southeastern Oklahoma, McGee Creek State Park centers around McGee Creek Reservoir, an important water resource surrounded by dense pine forests, rolling hills, and diverse wildlife habitats. The park spans over 2,700 acres of forested land adjacent to the 3,800-acre reservoir. The area is characterized by mixed hardwood and pine forests with species such as post oak, hickory, and shortleaf pine, supporting a wide range of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous bird species. The reservoir was completed in the 1980s for water supply, flood control, and recreation, creating opportunities for fishing bass, crappie, and catfish. Visitors enjoy well-maintained campgrounds offering both developed and primitive camping options, as well as picnic areas and boat ramps. McGee Creek State Park is also home to several hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through the forest, providing access to secluded natural areas and scenic overlooks of the water. The park's peaceful environment, combined with abundant outdoor activities, makes it a popular destination for families and nature enthusiasts seeking quiet recreation away from urban centers. Seasonal changes highlight the vibrant fall foliage and spring wildflowers. Visitors can explore the extensive trail system, engage in paddle sports such as kayaking, or simply relax by the water’s edge. McGee Creek State Park balances recreation with conservation, protecting local ecosystems while welcoming outdoor adventurers year-round.
