The park's varied terrain includes gently rolling hills, dense mixed conifer forests, and open water, creating habitat for a variety of wildlife including bald eagles, osprey, deer, and waterfowl. Historically, the area was used by Native American tribes and later by homesteaders before becoming a state park in 1963.
