Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Panola Mountain State Park is located in Stockbridge, Georgia, approximately 15 miles southeast of Atlanta. It is part of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area and was established to protect the unique monadnock environment of Panola Mountain. At 946 feet, Panola Mountain itself is a prominent granite outcrop, similar to the more famous Stone Mountain in nearby Atlanta, but remains in a more pristine condition. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, with rare and endangered plant species inhabiting its ecologically sensitive regions. Recreational opportunities include a variety of trails for hiking and biking, which weave through forested areas and provide scenic views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes. Guided hikes are available to educate visitors on the area's geology and ecology. The park also offers opportunities for birdwatching, archery, tree climbing, and picnicking, making it an appealing location for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
