About Quoddy Head State Park

Quoddy Head State Park is Maine’s easternmost point, offering dramatic coastal scenery, rugged cliffs, and iconic lighthouse views. The park is ideal for hiking, wildlife observation, and experiencing the power of the Atlantic Ocean.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Quoddy Head State Park sits at the easternmost tip of Maine, overlooking the convergence of the Bay of Fundy and the Atlantic Ocean. The park encompasses roughly 541 acres of rugged coastline, spruce-fir forest, and tidal pools. Its most famous landmark, the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, built in 1808, stands as the easternmost lighthouse in the United States and is renowned for its distinctive red-and-white striped tower. The locale's geography features jagged cliffs, rocky headlands, and diverse coastal ecosystems that support a range of bird species including seabirds and shorebirds. Visitors can explore several maintained trails that traverse open meadows and dense woods, often with panoramic views of the ocean, Canadian maritime provinces, and, on clear days, the distant St. Croix Island. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot harbor seals, migratory birds, and seasonal wildflowers. The park's history is tied to maritime navigation, fishing, and its strategic location near the U.S.-Canada border. Recreational pursuits include interpretive walks, photography, tide pooling, and picnicking near the lighthouse area. While camping is not available within the park, nearby towns provide accommodations. Quoddy Head State Park draws visitors for its unique blend of natural beauty, coastal solitude, and cultural significance as Maine's gateway to the Atlantic. Accessibility is year-round, with the best conditions found in late spring through early autumn when the weather is more temperate and daylight hours longer.
