Shelbyville Lake State Recreation Area is located in Shelby and Moultrie counties of central Illinois, anchored by the expansive Shelbyville Lake. The lake spans approximately 4,100 acres, making it a prime location for a variety of water-based activities including fishing, boating, and paddle sports. The surrounding parkland includes over 2,300 acres of forested and recreational land featuring diverse terrain with rolling hills, hardwood forests, and open grasslands. The area supports abundant wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, waterfowl, and various fish species including largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. Visitors can explore multiple trails that wind through woodlands and along the lake's shoreline, providing excellent opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing. Campgrounds with both developed and primitive sites accommodate visitors wishing to extend their stay. Historically, the area was developed in the 1970s in conjunction with the construction of the Shelbyville Dam on the Kaskaskia River, primarily for flood control and recreation.
