Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Ilisu State Reserve, established in 1987, is located in the northern part of Azerbaijan within the Gakh District. It covers a mountainous territory within the Greater Caucasus range, primarily aimed at preserving the unique mountain forest ecosystems and endemic flora and fauna of the region. The reserve encompasses diverse forest types dominated by oak, beech, hornbeam, and birch trees, and acts as a vital habitat for rare and endangered species such as the East Caucasian tur, roe deer, wild boar, and Caucasian lynx. Its steep terrain features deep gorges, fast-flowing mountain rivers, and panoramic ridges that are attractive to hikers and naturalists. Ilisu is also known for its traditional rural villages nearby that provide cultural context and hospitality to visitors. Although infrastructure within the reserve is modest, it offers a serene and pristine outdoor experience emphasizing nature conservation and small-scale eco-tourism. Key attractions include scenic mountain trails, wildlife spotting, and exploring untouched forest landscapes. It is also a critical site for scientific research due to its ecological diversity and conservation programs. Visitors seeking a remote natural retreat with rich biodiversity and cultural heritage will find Ilisu State Reserve a rewarding destination.
