Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Loxahatchee River, stretching across Palm Beach County in southeastern Florida, stands as a pristine example of a subtropical riverine environment. Part of the federally protected Wild and Scenic Rivers System since 1985, the river flows through Jonathan Dickinson State Park, home to diverse flora and fauna including cypress forests, mangroves, and over 150 species of birds. Historically, the river area was inhabited by the Seminole Tribe, and remnants of their heritage remain a key component of the river's cultural landscape. Visitors are drawn to the Loxahatchee for its premier paddling routes which meander through scenic canopies, providing an immersive wildlife experience. Notable wildlife includes West Indian manatees, alligators, and river otters. Photographers revel in the picturesque vistas and abundant wildlife, while anglers can enjoy freshwater and saltwater fishing opportunities. The river's proximity to urban areas makes it an accessible retreat for nature enthusiasts.
