Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River is located in central Arizona, winding through a lush canyon landscape distinguished by its vibrant blue-green waters created by high concentrations of calcium carbonate. The river runs for about 17 miles, part of its length designated as 'Wild & Scenic' to preserve its natural and cultural resources. This area is home to a variety of wildlife, including numerous bird species, and it supports native fish populations. The historical significance of Fossil Creek stems from the now-defunct Irving and Childs power plants, which were early 20th century hydroelectric facilities contributing to the region's development. Today, Fossil Creek is celebrated for recreation opportunities such as hiking, swimming, and wildlife viewing in a stunningly scenic setting. Notably, the creek's flow was partially restored intentionally to revitalize the ecosystem in a pioneering conservation effort.
