Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Situated within the Cherokee National Forest in eastern Tennessee, Citico Creek Wilderness spans over 16,226 acres of mountainous terrain, marked by dense forests, rich biodiversity, and clear running streams. This wilderness area is part of the Unicoi Mountains in the southern Appalachian region and is known for its rugged landscape, remote feel, and absence of roads, offering a true backcountry experience. Historically, the area was used for logging in the early 20th century and has since recovered into a thriving forested wilderness. The diverse ecology includes stands of hardwood trees and a variety of wildlife including black bears, white-tailed deer, and migratory birds. Key recreation opportunities include challenging hiking trails such as the South Fork Trail and the Citico Creek Loop, as well as excellent fishing spots along Citico Creek where trout are plentiful. Visitors are drawn to this area to enjoy the tranquility and seclusion away from the more developed parts of the forest.
