Named for both the explorer Kit Carson and a distinctive granite formation resembling an iceberg, the area is characterized by dramatic landscapes that provide habitat for a wide array of wildlife including black bears, mule deer, and the endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep. Historical significance also ties this land to native tribes and early pioneers.
