About Cohutta Wilderness

The Cohutta Wilderness is a vast, rugged expanse of protected land spanning Georgia and Tennessee, home to a large network of trails and stunning mountainous landscapes.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Cohutta Wilderness, part of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests, covers over 36,000 acres and is known for its rugged terrain and diverse ecosystems. Nestled within the Appalachian Mountains, it is primarily composed of dense hardwood forests and is intersected by the Conasauga River. Historically, this area was inhabited by Native American tribes and later became a significant site for logging until it was designated as a protected area in 1975. Outdoor enthusiasts frequent Cohutta for its extensive trail system, which offers both challenging hikes and serene nature walks. The area is a haven for wildlife, hosting species such as black bears, white-tailed deer, and a variety of bird species. Notable features include Cohutta Overlook for panoramic views and Jacks River Falls, a popular destination for backpackers. Cohutta's undeveloped nature provides a truly rustic experience, attracting those who seek solitude and adventure.
