Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Eagles Nest Wilderness is a designated wilderness area within the White River National Forest in Colorado. Covering approximately 133,496 acres, the wilderness is characterized by its dramatic peaks, including several that are over 13,000 feet, dense forests, and pristine alpine lakes. Established in 1976, the area was set aside to preserve its spectacular landscape and diverse ecosystems. The wilderness is home to abundant wildlife, including elk, moose, and black bears, as well as a variety of plant species that thrive in its varied terrains. Key recreation opportunities include hiking along its extensive network of trails, camping in its serene backcountry, and fishing in its many streams and lakes. The Gore Range, spanning through the wilderness, provides some of the most challenging and rewarding hiking and rock climbing routes in the region, drawing avid adventurers seeking its remote and rugged experience.
