About Philmont Scout Ranch

Philmont Scout Ranch is a vast wilderness area in northeastern New Mexico offering extensive backpacking, camping, and outdoor adventure opportunities within a rugged mountainous landscape.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Philmont Scout Ranch covers approximately 140,177 acres of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colfax County, New Mexico. Owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America, Philmont is distinguished by its expansive backcountry terrain, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural history. The landscape is predominantly mountain forest, alpine meadows, and rugged canyons, ranging in elevation from about 6,500 to over 12,500 feet. It harbors a variety of wildlife including mule deer, black bear, mountain lions, and an abundance of bird species. Philmont's geography features notable landmarks such as Mount Phillips, Tooth of Time rock formation, and Urraca Mesa. The area was once inhabited by Native American peoples and later became a ranch owned by Waite Phillips, who generously donated it to the Boy Scouts in the 1930s. Today, Philmont functions as a premier high adventure base, drawing scouts and outdoor enthusiasts from across the country. Visitors engage in multi-day backpacking treks that traverse over 180 miles of maintained trails, explore historical sites like abandoned mining camps, and learn wilderness skills. The ranch’s unique blend of outdoor recreation and education enhances its appeal. Accommodations vary from rustic staffed camps to fully primitive backcountry campsites, all designed to foster self-reliance and teamwork. Its remote location and challenging terrain provide an authentic mountain experience, while educational programs showcase conservation and outdoor ethics. Philmont Scout Ranch remains a landmark destination for youth scouting and outdoor education in the American Southwest.
