Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The San Gorgonio Wilderness spans over 95,000 acres within the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California. Dominated by the tallest peak in Southern California, San Gorgonio Mountain, rising to 11,503 feet, the wilderness offers breathtaking views and a diverse range of ecosystems. From low-elevation chaparral-covered foothills to alpine coniferous forests at higher elevations, this wilderness is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Established as a protected area in 1964, it offers a wealth of opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and wildlife viewing. The wilderness is home to diverse fauna, including the rare Nelson's bighorn sheep and various species of birds. The Southern California climate allows for year-round outdoor adventures, although snow can blanket the higher areas in winter, offering a different perspective of this unique wilderness.
