Bats Swamp Wildlife Management Area encompasses approximately 10,000 acres of bottomland hardwood forests, cypress-tupelo swamps, and wetland habitats along the Lynches River in Florence County, South Carolina. The area is a critical habitat for a variety of wildlife species, including waterfowl, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous songbirds. Historically used for timber and agriculture, the land was acquired and restored by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to preserve this vital ecosystem and provide outdoor recreation opportunities. Visitors can explore the WMA via a network of trails and roads that traverse mixed wetlands and upland forest, offering excellent chances for birdwatching, photography, hunting, and fishing. The swamp forests provide important habitat for neotropical migratory birds and amphibians. During fall and winter, waterfowl populations increase, drawing hunters and wildlife enthusiasts. The area's wetlands also serve as natural filters improving water quality downstream. Access points are found off local roads, and the region is accessible year-round. The WMA attracts naturalists, hunters, and hikers who seek a quiet, natural experience in a rarely disturbed South Carolina wetland region.
