Holly Knob Wildlife Management Area is located in Carroll County, Virginia, encompassing steep forested ridges, rocky slopes, and secluded valleys within the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area is characterized by mixed hardwood forests, including oak, hickory, and pine, which provide habitat for various wildlife species such as black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous game birds. The topography is rugged, with Holly Knob itself reaching approximately 3,800 feet in elevation, offering a remote and challenging landscape favored by experienced hunters and outdoor adventurers. Historically managed by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, the WMA is primarily focused on game management and outdoor recreation including hunting and trapping. Visitors can take advantage of foot trails and rugged backcountry roads, but facilities are minimal to maintain a wild atmosphere. The WMA provides excellent opportunities for hunting during designated seasons, particularly for deer, turkey, and small game, as well as wildlife viewing throughout the year. Access is largely primitive, which appeals to those seeking solitude and an authentic wilderness experience. Although camping is generally allowed in accordance with state regulations, no developed campgrounds or visitor centers exist on site. Holly Knob WMA is popular among locals and sportsmen who value its unspoiled environment and challenging terrain.
