Lake Limestone Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located primarily in Leon and Limestone counties in east-central Texas. The WMA encompasses the lands surrounding Lake Limestone, an impoundment formed on the Navasota River, offering both aquatic and upland habitats. The area spans thousands of acres of mixed hardwood forests, brushlands, and open water, providing an important habitat for a variety of wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, turkey, waterfowl, and numerous fish species. The area's history is tied closely to the construction of the lake in the 1970s, which was developed primarily for water supply and recreation. Today, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages the Lake Limestone WMA to conserve wildlife populations, support healthy habitat, and provide quality outdoor recreation opportunities. Visitors come for seasonal hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing, with the lake known for its largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie fisheries. Bird species include migratory waterfowl and resident songbirds, making it a favored spot for birders. The WMA features multiple boat ramps, fishing piers, and roadside viewing areas. Although formal developed camping facilities are not abundant within the WMA, primitive camping and day use opportunities are popular. The combination of woodland and aquatic environments attracts anglers, hunters, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike, making it a valuable public resource for outdoor recreation in Texas.
