Oakmulgee Wildlife Management Area is located in the central part of Alabama and is part of the larger Talladega National Forest. Spanning a vast area of mostly wooded land, it is best known for its significant populations of longleaf pine and shortleaf pine forests, as well as the diverse wildlife that these habitats support. The area is particularly noted for its conservation efforts targeted at the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species that relies on mature pine forests. Historically, the forest was once abundant in longleaf pines which were critical for various industries; however, now the emphasis is on conservation and restoration to maintain these unique habitats. Oakmulgee is a popular destination for outdoor recreation such as hunting, hiking, and birdwatching. The landscape is characterized by rolling terrain, with creeks and small waterfalls contributing to its scenic beauty. While the rugged ground poses some challenges, it offers rewarding opportunities for those seeking a more natural experience. Visitors can engage in seasonal hunts in designated areas or explore numerous unpaved roads and trails which crisscross the management area.
