Rend Lake Wildlife Management Area, located in Jefferson and Franklin counties in southern Illinois, encompasses thousands of acres surrounding the 18,900-acre Rend Lake reservoir. Created primarily for flood control and water supply, the lake and its surrounding lands also serve as a prominent wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation destination. The WMA includes a variety of ecosystems such as hardwood forests, wetlands, grasslands, and reclaimed strip mines, which provide habitat for diverse species including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and numerous migratory birds. The area has a rich history linked to post-war land reclamation and conservation efforts driven by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Visitors can enjoy numerous activities, including premium bass, catfish, and crappie fishing in Rend Lake, hunting seasons for waterfowl, deer, and upland birds, and hiking or mountain biking on maintained trail systems.
