Upper Red Lake Wildlife Management Area

Upper Red Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses more than 58,000 acres of wetland complexes, marshes, open water, and forest lands surrounding the northern part of Upper Red Lake in Beltrami County, Minnesota. It forms a significant part of the Red Lake Peatland, one of the largest peat wetland complexes in the United States. This protected area provides critical habitat for a wide range of wildlife species including waterfowl, wading birds, deer, bear, and numerous fish species. The area is particularly famous among hunters for its productive duck and goose hunting seasons, drawing outdoor enthusiasts each fall. Additionally, fishermen visit for walleye and northern pike in the lake’s shallow bays and channels. Bird watchers benefit from the extensive wetlands that support rare species such as the short-eared owl and American bittern. Although developed trails and campgrounds are limited, the remote setting appeals to those seeking solitude and wilderness experience. Access is mostly by dirt roads and boat launches located around Upper Red Lake, with occasional seasonal closures due to wet conditions. The management area is overseen by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, which balances habitat protection with sustainable outdoor recreation.
